If you’re looking to change up your outdoor living space, but you want to make sure you do it in an eco-friendly and sustainable way, College Station Covered Porch and Outdoor Kitchens is here with some helpful advice on how to get a beautiful space while minimizing the damage it will have on our lovely planet.

One of the eco-friendliest materials are actually concrete pavers. Concrete pavers are essentially brick-shaped blocks of concrete. These pavers have an average lifespan of around 70 years. If you compare that to any sort of deck or patio made of wood, that’s a very big difference. Wood only lasts about 20 years or so. The longevity of these concrete pavers reduces waste, as well as they’re usually locally sourced which reduces unnecessary waste from transportation.

Actually, concrete pavers were specifically designed with sustainability in mind! PICP, or permeable interlocking concrete pavers are actually a full system of pavers with aggregate stone underneath them that filter rainwater and direct the water to underground aquifers. The rain that falls onto the pavers seeps into the ground and the pollution and bacteria in the rainwater are naturally filtered out by the concrete and aggregate.

If you’re really set on a wood deck or wood fencing, though, you can help reduce the environmental strain that comes with wooden structures by using reclaimed wood. It’s older and weathered, but this actually helps create a sturdier deck, fence, pergola, or other wood structure while being a little bit better for the earth.

Another great way to light up your yard without being so terrible for the environment is energy-efficient exterior lighting. Using solar-powered yard lights will save you money and reduce unnecessary waste from regular incandescent light bulbs that you have to regularly replace. Solar-powered lights will store energy throughout the daytime and only turn on once it’s dark and you actually need them.

Installing a rainwater harvesting system is going to be another great way to be more environmentally friendly. You waste a lot of water using a regular water hose to water your plants but harvesting rainwater to use instead is going to be much better for the planet. This might not always be a possibility depending on where you live, but if you can at least use rainwater occasionally, it will still be beneficial to the earth.
