What is a garage? A garage is a walled and roofed structure to house vehicles, often they’re attached to a home, but they can also be separate. They usually have space for one or two cars and have garage doors that can lock to keep the vehicles safe.
What is a carport? A carport is essentially a free standing, roofed structure that provides minimal protection for vehicles, usually just from weather. Occasionally they are actually attached to the home as well by a single wall.
Price: If the cost is one of your main concerns, a carport will definitely be cheaper here. Since a carport is often just a roof with pillars, there are a lot less materials needed to construct them. They are much less complex than garages, and that saves lots of money on materials. A general estimate for a carport is anywhere from $5,000 to $15,000 depending on how big you want it. For a garage, the cost is closer to $25,000+.
Security: Garages win this aspect. Since they are completely enclosed and usually have a lockable garage door, they’re much more secure. They can easily keep out unwanted strangers or pests, as well as any weather. Carports only really provide protection from the elements, unfortunately.
Speed of Construction: Carports are going to be able to be constructed more quickly. Garages take time to build, especially if you need to insulate internal walls and have any electric work done. If time is an important factor, you may want to go with a carport.
Storage Space: Garages are the obvious winner here, since they are very regularly used for storage, and have the ability to keep anything you store in them out of the elements. Carports are really only good for keeping your car safe from the weather.
