As you may or may not know, hiring a covered deck contractor to build a covered deck for you isn’t necessarily the most straight forward process. There are so many choices when it comes to customizing your covered deck and it can be super overwhelming if you aren’t working with the right contractor. Here at College Station Covered Porch and Outdoor Kitchens, we make it our goal to simplify the process for you as much as we can.
So, you want a covered deck, but do you know what kind?
To start off, figuring out the base wood for your deck. As discussed in one of our other articles, your main options are:
“Pressure-Treated Wood: This wood has been preserved with chemicals to prevent rotting, mold, water damage, and insect infestation. This lumber is used quite commonly all around the country. It’s often made from southern pine, but the wood used can easily vary. It’s also incredibly durable and can withstand quite a bit of wear and tear.
Tigerwood: It’s a hardwood decking material that actually originates from the Central and South Americas. It can last up to 25 years with the right kind of care and maintenance, and since it doesn’t need consistent re-staining and treatments, it’s quite easy to take care of. Tigerwood is durable against various climates and is also resistant to rot like the pressure-treated lumber is. This wood comes in various shades of reds and browns, and it has a striped pattern that much resembles tigers, which is where the lumber got its name.
Trex Composite: Trex Composite is sturdier than regular wood, because it’s made up of a combination of recycled wood, sawdust, and plastic film which makes a wood-plastic composite. It’s incredibly eco-friendly, and it’s also stain, fade, mold, mildew, and termite resistant, and won’t rot or crack over time.”
Once you’ve figured out the base of your deck you can move your focus to the covering for your deck.
Awnings are a great option for those that are interested in a more colorful, patterned, or modern look. They come in many different styles and designs, so the possibilities are endless. You also have the option of retractable or stationary awnings. Retractable awnings are great for those that want to be able to choose when they have shelter. Stationary awnings are great for those that want the permanent shade fixture, though regardless of the type of awning you want, you’ll want to discuss with us whether or not your awning will need to be stabilized with anchor pillars. Since they are usually only connected on one side of your home, they aren’t the most stable on their own in strong weather. Their positioning can also be a downside if you’re wanting something that will extend farther over your deck.
Pergolas are another great option. They are usually built with parallel beams and are open to the sky, though they can be built so that they’re covered as well. You can customize how much shade your pergola provides by changing the distance between the beams. Wood is the go-to material for pergolas, but other materials such as metal, bamboo, and plastic can be used as well depending on the look you’re going for. Pavilions are very similar to pergolas, though they are specifically designed to have closed roofs. Similar to pergolas, they are often made of wood, but can be built from other materials as well. These are a great option for those who know they want cover from the elements at all times and can be a great place to have a seating area under. With pavilions or pergolas, they can be attached to your home and made to look like they’re just a continuation of your roof, or they can be separate from your home and stand alone. The choice is completely up to you and your vision.
